Name: Vesper Sheridan
Alias: Doc
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Nationality: Zailleon
Appearance: Vesper is a short wisp of a woman, standing at five feet, four inches in height and weighing a little under one hundred and twenty pounds. Red hair, usually tied in a pony-tail tops her head, a few crimson bangs left to sweep down over startling beautiful eyes, their irises the color of emeralds.
She is extremely fit and healthy, and possesses what most would agree to be just the right amount of feminine curves. While she is by no means extraordinary in looks, she is quite beautiful, with a serene grace and assurance in her movements that lend one to think of some sort of ethereal being.
Attire: Vesper’s attire is as non-threatening and pleasant as possible, given her resources.
Tough wooly socks, over which go a pair of worn hiking boots. Brown and cracked with age and dust. Her pants are plain blue jeans, simple and comfortable in design, with deep pockets at the hip, and a second pair a little above the knees. A solid-looking brown leather belt with a silver buckle (formed in the shape of a starburst) firmly secures the jeans to her waist.
A white button-up T-shirt made of cotton clothes her upper half. Plain brown buttons clasp it together from collar to bottom, which is firmly tucked into the jeans. Over that goes her only concession to her military life in the form of a Kevlar/Mythril-reinforced combat vest, pitch-black in color and lined with dozens of pockets meant to carry medical supplies.
Personality: Vesper is one of the kindest, nicest people one could meet. She has a seeming eternally cheerful attitude towards life, even in the most dire of situations. When you’re feeling down, it’s a sure bet that she’ll be there to cheer you up. She rarely ever has a bad thing to say about anyone, and on the rare occasions she does, it’s usually not as harsh as it could be.
But don’t mistake Vesper’s warm, cheerful personality for weakness, oh no. She’s not a pushover, and she has one of the strongest moral codes one could imagine. She believes fully in what she is doing, and is possibly one of the most stubborn people you’ll ever meet. Once she’s set her course, she’ll not change from it without a seriously good reason.
She’s also thoughtful, and can be counted upon to offer level-headed advice in almost any situation.
Possessions:
A Teddy Bear: childish as it may be, Vesper keeps this brown, scraggly teddy-bear in her bunk whenever she travels. It’s missing one eye, it’s arms have been sewn back on more times than should be possible, and it has a bright patch of blue fur where a can of paint was accidently spilled on it at one point.
Special Abilities:
Medically inclined: Vesper, surprisingly enough, is a well-trained and highly skilled mage. Specializing in healing powers. She’s able to heal most wounds, no matter the cause. Though like most magic, it comes at the cost of weariness. The greater the wound, the greater the exhaustion.
Aside from her magical abilities, she is also skilled in more mundane (though still very effective) medical areas. Making her a boon even without her magic.
Cool-headed: Vesper, while she listens to her emotions, doesn’t let them overcome her. And keeps a cool and rational head in almost any situation, including combat.
History: Vesper was born to a modest Kallagulia family near the beginning of 75 S.R. Her parents, Amber and Jason, were both doctors working for a lower-income hospital, their pay was quite horrendous and the hours long, but even while trying to make ends meet they were able to make time for Vesper.
Growing up in their small house wasn’t terribly hard, Vesper’s parents were a cheerful pair who honestly loved to help people, and they passed that sense of earnest helpfulness on to their daughter, and eventually, to their next two children as well. For five years after Vesper was born, they had a pair of twins, a boy and a girl (Jasper and Andrea).
For much of her childhood, Vesper gladly took on the role of big sister and guardian for her siblings, as her parents worked full days to pay the bills, and thus couldn’t be there for their children during the day.
It was during her childhood that her parents discovered that Vesper had powerful magical potential. They were shocked, to tell the truth. Their families had never shown much magical ability, and Vesper’s parents had no magical abilities what-so-ever. However, after having her tested, a local mage said her magical capability was tremendous, and he was shocked to hear that her family had very little magical ability at all.
Afer that, Vesper spent much of her time as a teenager learning how to work with magic (specifically medical magic, as she wished to follow her parents in their medical practice), though her parents also emphasized a strong non-magical medical background as well. They were practical people, and didn’t wish their daughter to be left helpless should her magic somehow fail her.
When Vesper was twenty, she took a job with the local hospital her parents also worked for, and quickly fell into her work, truly happy to be able to help others. She stayed in Kallagulia for five years, living a quiet, peaceful life with her family. But then her siblings were accepted into a prestigious college, and their family had to come to a hard decision. Vesper and her parents wanted very badly to see Jasper and Andrea take this chance at a quality education, but the numbers didn’t add up. Even working on all three of the adult’s salaries, the money wasn’t enough for the expensive college.
It was at that time when a seeming miracle walked into their hospital. A man by the name of Robert Valentine, a mercenary commander, was combing hospitals for medical personnel suited to working with a roving mercenary unit. He quickly focused on Vesper, as she was a skilled doctor and powerful magical healer. She initially refused his offer, not wishing to leave her city and family to travel with some unknown man.
But over a few weeks, Robert convinced her to take a chance, see what life was like with his unit. In the end, Vesper wasn’t sure exactly why she said “yes”. Possibly because of the money (Valentine paid extremely well, well enough to send her siblings to college), or maybe even the adventure. But either way, she took the job and found it to be extremely gratifying. The Outcasts weren’t a simple mercenary unit, she soon found, but a close-knit family unit that cared greatly for each individual member.
With the Outcasts, Vesper believes she found her true calling, and has never given thought to returning to her old life.
Miscellaneous: The Outcasts have a saying regarding Vesper, or Doc, as they fondly labeled her. “If you’re not dead on a slab, Doc can bring you back in a jiffy. If you are dead...well, that’ll actually take her a day or two.”
Also, a while back RD challenged Risk and I to write a character who’s family didn’t die in some horrific occurrence. This would be my submission.
