Joe rolled his eyes, "you are correct, in that it would be highly illegal to steal it from the Grand Library. Fortunately for us, we didn't steal it." He nodded towards Zandara. "Dara here, she found it in a antique shop's book collection."
The lie came easily enough. It wouldn't do to let to bandits know that Dara was something of an adventurer. She was already of enough use to them by being a mage. Add in the fact that she also poked around old ruins and found things of extreme value...and it wouldn't look good for his supposed niece.
"So, you're apparently a rich and happy man now, thanks to us. We're not of much value to you. Which honestly sounds like plenty of good reasons to simply kill us and be done with it all."
Joe's eyes narrowed, "But you could also just let us go. We've been blindfolded and have no bloody clue where we are, besides the general fact that we're in a mine. Which...last I checked, there are plenty of mines near the area you took us from. It would be amazingly easy to blindfold us and lead us out of where-ever we are, and then leave us to find our own way. No harm done to you. And frankly I've got a pair of nieces that I really would like to take out to dinner with my brother, he's visiting from Zailleon, you see."
He trailed off, eyes focused on the bandit. The suggestion probably wasn't even worth trying, but he had too. Laramie...and to a lesser extent, Zandara were his primary concerns now. The book was useful, yes, but not worth their lives. His commander might disagree, but the General wasn't here...and Joe was. He had to try something to save Laramie, anything.
