The Great Wall of Kouchi
Across the northern wilderness of Kouchi lies one of its most mysterious relics of the past: the Great Wall of Kouchi, a massive barrier separating the majority of the continent from the chaotic regions between it and the Maelstrom, the unending storm. The Great Wall stretches out for several thousand kilometers across the colder regions of Kouchi, traversing across the tundra and over the few mountains in its path. The Great Wall is a kind of “silent line” in the world, as all communications beyond the wall go silent. The Wall serves as a warning and a deterrent, reminding people that they should never go past the silent line and become lost in the cold reaches.
It is made of a curious blending of differing architecture, combining ancient stone reinforced with plates of ageless-looking metal. The wall spans up nearly sixty meters in height, with two levels of wide ramparts along either side, one being higher than the other. The upper rampart is separated into a pair of walkways by a rising wall that angles up into a sharp-looking edge. Every ten kilometers, a watchtower structure has been erected, spanning two more levels above the wall itself and ending in a peculiar, four-sided steeple. Each level of the towers sports numerous balconies for observation and defensive purposes. There are a number of gated entrances set into the walls itself, accessed by stairways and bridges extending out from the wall on either side. These entrances are set a kilometer apart from one another, and the passageways within lead to many empty rooms within the wall, offer access to the desolate watchtowers, and connect to the outdoor ramparts.
The stone bricks and columns not covered by the metal looks weathered, as if it had been exposed to the elements for several decades. It has, in fact, been exposed for millennia. On a similar note, the metal plates covering most of the Great Wall have been exposed for just as long, but look untouched entirely by the merciless passage of time, creating an interesting dichotomy between the two materials and architectures used to create it in the first place. Above the Great Wall’s upper edge, a wavering field of light extends high into the air, like a gigantic aurora. This light is just that, a field of light, and is purely aesthetic in nature. Crossing over it does no harm. Curiously enough, when viewed from a distance at night, the Great Wall’s metallic plates seem to glow, much like its simulated aurora. However, this glow fades from view as others come closer to it. Despite extensive studies by scientists and mages, no one has been able to figure out this phenomenon.
