The Dragons’ Birthing Grounds
Deep within the Valtheran Outlands lies a vast region of land that is controlled by no man, elf, dwarf, orc, or komola. Venturing into this forbidden territory, even with the help of military forces and combat vehicles, is considered a suicidal move, as these lands are controlled by the dragons of the world. For thousands of years, the various dragonflights have roosted in these lands to lay their clutches, waiting for the eggs to hatch and give rise to a new generation of dragons. The Birthing Grounds are under the constant surveillance of the dragons who patrol its skies. Because of their shared draconian blood, other creatures related to dragons have come here for the same purpose, including dragonets, drakes, wyrms, and wyverns. They are among the only creatures that remain in this region, due to the fierce protectiveness of the females guarding their egg clutches.
The Birthing Grounds extends over a vast region of land, and has a diverse environment. It is situated at the base of a small, snowless mountain range. Here, most of the weyrs are created, burrowed into the mountainsides by the flames and acid of Black and Red Dragons. The ledges and overhangs here offer perfect roosting places for dragons that watch out over the region. The Birthing Grounds reach out from the mountain range across a savannah that is mostly devoid of grass. This area takes up the most room in the Birthing Grounds, consisting of red-brown soils and sand gathered from the coastal beaches. Most of the clutches are kept here, out in the open where the sun and heated sands keep the eggs warm until they’re ready to hatch. The savannah eventually gives way to the outer forests, which act as a kind of border for the Birthing Grounds. Here, most of the lesser draconic species nest, though they are free to delve deeper into the Grounds. Due to the lack of Rumbletrunk trees, Green Dragons nesting here tend to craft their weyrs around the inner edges of the forests, rather than in the main of the savannah.
Due to the immense population of dragons in the region, the continental nation of Valtheran has restricted travel in the Birthing Grounds region. They are worried that the theft of dragon eggs could upset the population there, causing a catastrophe should the dragons begin a vicious retribution as they hunt for the thief and their stolen eggs, an event no one is willing to risk. Due to this, travel lanes are forced to be redirected around the travel grounds, as airships and planes that have strayed too close to the Birthing Grounds have been known to be trailed by ever-watchful dragons. Due to such restrictions, daring smugglers have been known to cut through the Birthing Grounds, despite the danger of doing so.
