The Hanging City of Iaedora
When the renowned explorer Ginther D’Covale first discovered the ancient canyon that would later be known as Ginther’s Rift, his eyes immediately fell upon a majestic structure that hung silently at the end of the canyon, high above the canopy of trees that lined the river cutting through its center. It is this structure, which he thought to be built within the walls of the canyon, that fueled his decision to push through the wilderness of the canyon and discover the structure’s secrets. After days of travel, D’Covale discovered that the structure was not something that jut from the rocky walls of the canyon, but hovered between them, high above the canyon floor. A series of interconnected metal plates that spanned hundreds of meters across, held in place above in the air by a series of gigantic cables tethered to ancient supports in the canyon walls.
Three main plates, roughly pentagonal in shape, form a large, roughly hexagonal superstructure linked together by a series of smaller, but no less impressive, metal platforms situated above and beneath the three main plates. Throughout these platforms, numerous buildings have been constructed, forming a vast city. Once, these buildings and the streets running between them stood empty and barren, having forgotten the touch of sentient races. Now, however, this hanging city has been claimed as the capital of Valtheran and its seat of power. People fill the platforms, bringing life back to the ancient structures, and businesses, shops, industries, and residential districts flourish through it. Though obviously technological in design, Iaedora is not without nature. The gigantic plates had been designed to hold vast plots of imported land, which are maintained through ancient magic spells designed to help sustain the growth of plantlife. Many sections of the city hold forested parks, while the metal platforms surrounding them are dedicated to the city proper. The top center plate is the where the palace of the King resides, taking up a good portion of the platform. The rest of it is surrounded by defensive military structures that hold garrisons, hanger bays, and turret mountings. Similar, but much larger and more heavily fortified structures can be found at the edges of the three main plates, each with dedicated military presences to defend the city against invaders such as the Holy Empire of Stamaria.
Transportation across the platforms is made possible by several small airports housing small airships, and through the use of tram-cars. Generally, these tram-cars are meant for people to use to reach adjacent platforms via smaller, but no less sturdy cables lacing through the different city plates. Smaller taxi airships are used to cross vast distances over the plates when regular cars are not able to, while larger airships and planes are used to cross distances over various plates. These airships, while a bit expensive, are often easier on people than the free-use, and oft-crowded, tram-car systems. Larger transport airships are required to reach and depart from the hanging city itself, via airports residing at the base of Ginther’s Rift and throughout the rest of the kingdom of Valtheran.
